The Right to be Salty

You have the right to stand against the wrongs in society, even if its from the government. You have this authority from our Constitution and from the Bible. Not just the right to resist evil but the mandate from both. There has been some confusion on this issue with the Constitution and Bible being miss represented in our time. Let us take a little time together and see how the two work together.

The Bible talks about the role of governments and what God expects of them, likewise it also defines the responsibilities of citizens. The common verse of the day to define citizen’s role is Romans 13:1-7.  We tend to apply this verse only to citizens, but it also applies to the government. Let’s look at each.

If citizens follow these principles, they will receive approval from the government and God and keep a clear conscience. If they rebel and do evil, then they will receive the sword from government and judgement from God.

These verses in Romans assume the government will obey God. But what happens when it doesn’t? What is the consequence when the government causes terror on the good and rewards evil? We call this tyranny. We must go to other verses to find those answers. But in general, God will step in directly or bring in an outside government to punish the offending government. This ambiguity is why the founder threw in a twist!

The American founding fathers struggled with this verse for years before and during our revolution. After doing everything possible to rectify the aggression of England, they saw the revolution as self-defense, led by the American government. Understanding the dangers of tyranny, the founders wanted to prevent tyranny forming here. So, the founders structured our constitution in a way that Christian citizens could unquestionably stand up to tyranny without violating God’s command.

As an illustration, let us first look at a man who has earned a seat in the House of Representatives. When he is in Washington, he is part of the government. He is bound by God to protect those who do good and bring God’s wrath to evildoers. However, when he is out of session and in his home state, he is a citizen. He is now bound by God to obey the laws and do what is good. Then it changes again when he goes back to Washington. The mandates change depending on his role at the time.

Another illustration is the Pulpit Committee at a church. When there is a pastor, the Pulpit Committee doesn’t exist, except on the paper of the church’s constitution. However, when there is no pastor or when one needs firing, the Pulpit committee is formed with full powers of an Elder Board. The Pulpit Committee exists until the task is done, then dissolved.

Citizens as a group have the same type of situation as these two examples. When we are at home and the government is good, then we are just citizens. We are then bound by God to submit to the authorities. However, when the government acts against God’s mandates then citizens as a group become a legal governmental check on the government. It then becomes the citizen’s responsibility to discipline the government. If they do not, then God will hold the citizens accountable for not carrying out his wrath against the errant government. When the situation is corrected, then they become citizens again.

Before we go to the constitution, let’s hear advice from Thomas Jefferson.

“On every occasion [of Constitutional interpretation] let us carry ourselves back to the time when the Constitution was adopted, recollect the spirit manifested in the debates, and instead of trying [to force] what meaning may be squeezed out of the text, or invented against it, [instead let us] conform to the probable one in which it was passed.”

Thomas Jefferson, letter to William Johnson, 12 June 1823

In other words, there will be a lot of people wanting to alter or convolute the constitution. Do not listen to them but go back to the original words of the Constitution and keep it in context of the day it was written. He was prophetic. The debates over the second amendment have gone back and forth. The debates cannot rectify how government militia and individual gun rights are being interconnected. They tend to go towards only government military having guns or ignore the militia and focus on the individual rights. But it is neither extreme.

We must remember that the state and federal government do not want a strong civilian force. The state government is more likely to support individual gun rights to help protect the state from federal encroachment. However, they still don’t want the civilians to be strong enough to resist them. Therefore, the debates become a balance between gun rights and restrictions.

We must remember that the citizens are the ultimate human authority in America as James Madison writes:

“The federal and state governments are in fact but different agents and trustees of the people, instituted with different powers, and designated for different purposes. The adversaries of the constitution seem to have lost sight of the people altogether in their reasonings on this subject; and to have viewed these different establishments, not only as mutual rivals and enemies, but as uncontrouled by any common superior in their efforts to usurp the authorities of each other. These gentlemen must here be reminded of their error. They must be told that the ultimate authority, wherever the derivative may be found, resides in the people alone; and that it will not depend merely on the comparative ambition or address of the different governments, whether either, or which of them, will be able to enlarge its sphere of jurisdiction at the expence of the other.”

James Madison, Federalist No. 46, January 29, 1788

With this in mind, let us look at the second amendment.

“A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed. “

The question then is in defining “militia.” How did the founders define militia?

“Besides the advantage of being armed, which the Americans possess over the people of almost every other nation, the existence of subordinate governments, to which the people are attached, and by which the militia officers are appointed, forms a barrier against the enterprises of ambition, more insurmountable than any which a simple government of any form can admit of.”

James Madison, Federalist No. 46, January 29, 1788

According to Madison,
• The government is subordinate to the armed people.
• These armed people are attached to the government as a militia.
• Militia officers are appointed to these armed people.
• Why: to protect against ambitious government.

If the militia is a government military, then it can’t keep the government in check. It would also create a situation where the individual right to bear arms is irrelevant. But if the militia is citizen owned with a few trained leaders, then both individual rights and protection holds true. Here are more quotes to support, citizens with guns over government.

“I ask who are the militia? They consist now of the whole people, except a few public officers.”

George Mason, Address to the Virginia Ratifying Convention, June 4, 1788

Also:
“The Constitution of most of our states (and of the United States) assert that all power is inherent in the people; that they may exercise it by themselves; that it is their right and duty to be at all times armed.”

Thomas Jefferson, letter to John Cartwright, 5 June 1824

And:
“What country can preserve its liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance. Let them take arms.”

Thomas Jefferson, letter to James Madison, December 20, 1787

When the American government brings harm to the good and rewards evil, American Citizens becomes the Citizen Militia.  This is a government agency charged to stop the corruption, by peaceful means or with guns if needed.  As we read in Romans 13 above about governments, this is instituted by God.  If citizens do not carry out the Citizen Militia, then they will be held accountable by God.

You may ask who leads this mob with guns?  Early in America it was the church, and “few public officers”.  The first amendment kept the government from interfering with the church, so the church could carry out this task of moral guidance. The first amendment also kept the founders from establishing a state religion so the founders could not spell it out in the constitution.  However, John Adams, said, “Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.”  Without the church guiding the Population and Civilian Militia we can not exist as a free country.

Biblically, it is the church’s responsibility to teach those in their congregations the moral responsibilities that the congregations face and what the Bible says about them. This even includes their political responsibilities.  You can see how the church filled this roll by reading Civil War sermons that condemned slavery and motivated people to join the war.

Today, many pastors do not see this as their roll. Let us look at it through this example. If a judge is a member of a church and everyone knows he is an an unjust judge and if the pastor doesn’t confront that judge with what the Bible says about his actions, will that pastor be held accountable by God for the sins of the judge? Of course, by his neglect he is enabling sin. The same applies to pastors who do not hold the citizens accountable for their roll as the Citizen Militia.

If citizens do not carry out the Citizen Militia, then they will be held accountable by God.

The civilians and the church get human authority from the founders of the Constitution to resist tyranny.  God is also asking for us to resist evil.  “Who will rise up for me against the wicked? Who will take a stand for me against evildoers? Psalm 94:16.

So, if we have the authority from our Constitution and from God, then why haven’t we exercised this since the Civil War?  I think, over time, as we sat in comfort and control, we started making compromises.

“Her leaders judge for a bribe,  her priests teach for a price, and her prophets tell fortunes for money. Yet they look for the Lord’s support and say, “Is not the Lord among us?     No disaster will come upon us.”

Micah 3:11

Christians accepted a tax deduction for a bribe to not talk about the government.  It became ‘Godly’ to abstain from the mire of politics and culture.  Thus, abandoning the unique honor of shepherding our nation that our forefathers gave us as an inheritance.  We left God’s flock to be shepherded by the wolves.  Then we say, “God, bless America!”

You may say that that Christians can’t agree on much.  Maybe not, but how would our culture look if every Christian pushed for what was right in their community? Even divided, it would have a great impact. For example, if Christians chose both the Democrat and Republican candidates in the primaries, would it change politics?  Since churches have longer memories than individuals, we could have held politicians and culture accountable.  Would abortion exist in America?  Could we have made social reforms quicker? By neglecting evil, we gave it our consent and it has grown.  I believe God will hold American citizens accountable both as a government and citizens.

We love to quote Matthew 5:13a, “You are the salt of the earth.”  However, I seldom see the rest of the verse with it. “…but if the salt has become tasteless, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men.”  I see this verse working out in America.  Christians left government, education, and culture to those who hate God.  We stopped being salt of the earth, and now we are seeing the trampling. I love the church and my country.  I just morn what we have lost.  Let us repent and return to what we can be. We can be the American Church, standing as a defense against tyranny, the salt of the earth.

If we are not willing to defend truth in our culture, how will people trust us when we share the truth of Jesus?

Action:

First, Gather Salt. Please share this article with your friends and family. It will be filtered by Big Tech companies so share it, email it, text it, print it and share with everyone. Find others who are like minded. A grain of salt in the soup will have little effect, a tablespoon of salt flavors and preserves. Find others who want to be salt. If this angers someone, don’t try to convince them, move on and build a team of the willing. There are millions who agree.

Second, Educate Yourself. Conservative and Christian sources and ideals are being filtered by main stream media and social networking apps who are Anti-Christian and Anti-Constitution. When you find truth, push it out to everyone you know. Send sources you find to SaltyCentral.com and we’ll post it on our Truth Sources page.

A Salty Moment

My first lesson in being Salty, turned out pretty salty (pun intended). I was 21 and coming into my own. One night I was eating at Denny’s and reading my Bible. It was past ten at night and only a couple of people were there. I prayed, “Lord, please bring me someone that I can tell about Jesus.  The words were no more prayed when a man and his date walked in.

The man was about five-foot ten.  He was a wide as he was tall with solid muscle.  If you envision a caricature of an overly muscled man, that is a good place to start.  He wore a red muscle shirt with shoulder straps barely existing and the rest hanging on his body as if his muscles where shredding it with every flex and movement. His pants were spandex and looked as if they were trying to be a second skin more than a coving.  His date was his perfect match.  She was a couple inches taller, but that may have been more due to the heels she wore.  They were so tall a circus performer would have been jealous.  She sported a leopard skin mini skirt, with the emphasis on “mini” and almost ignoring “skirt.”

Jesus said, “Ok, tell them about me.”  I simply replied, “not this time, Lord.”

This encounter could have gone horribly wrong with the police finding me in a dumpster somewhere. It could have been humiliating with them mocking and laughing. It could have gone really well, with them receiving eternal life. I will never know, and I have regretted that decision ever since. Like the 80’s expression says, I felt pretty salty.

There have many other times in my life where I was able to be “salt” in someone’s life. Some went poorly, most turned out well.  This story has been here to encourage me and others to continue to take the risk each and every day.
